It would be the greatest honor to be a TRIO SSS transfer mentor for Wenatchee Valley College students. I am interested in being a transfer mentor because as a first-generation college student I understand that being a first-generation student of color comes with barriers, but also gives me a unique and valuable perspective with which to bring to higher education. My parents only have an elementary education and have no understanding of the U.S educational system and as the middle child of five siblings, I understand the responsibilities and pressures youth in these populations have with shouldering the burden to accessing and disseminating information to their entire family. Additionally, I understand the cultural challenges some students of color may face as many traditional households discourage pursuing …show more content…
As an undergraduate student, I worked for two years as a Multicultural student mentor for the Native American Student Center. I mentored and provided individualized attention to 24 Freshman/Transfer students, assisted mentees transition into college while providing on campus resources and helped organized cultural events and an annual conference for mentees. Additionally, I have volunteered as a tutor for elementary schools where I have assisted children after school with homework and daily assignments. Furthermore, I have served as a team leader for Children of Aztlán Sharing Higher Education (CASHE) conference and Future Cougars of Color, where I promoted higher education among diverse and at risk high school students and provided resources to student on the university and college admission process. Lastly, I served as a student ambassador for Imagine You at WSU; I provided bilingual information on college requirements to high school student and

For the summer of 2016 I decided it would be a great idea to do work study for Trio Upward Bound at Delaware Technical & Community College. While there I did any errands that had to be done, record attendance, or file papers. This experience met my expectations as I had expected to help my supervisor in any way possible and do any office work that needed to be done. By only having done this, I knew I had contributed to the program because even the littlest help can save others time and work. Having done this work study was not a difficult task for me as I possess few skills and knowledge that helped me through it.…

In the future, my goal is to set a good example for other Latino students. I want to be able to help the Latino community and to inform them of the many opportunities they have here in the United States of America. Finishing college or even entering college is something that many Latinos feel they will never be able to do. Many Latino parents came to this country to give their children a good future. These parents work hard to give their children the life they never had.…

I can see myself enriching the diversity of Boulder's community through usage of my bilingual education and comprehension of different cultures. Being Latino, I understand the Spanish language and Latin culture, something that is a big part of the nation's community. Through these capacities, I open a broader connection with the community. In understanding how to communicate with others of Latin origin, I can work with a wide group of students to solve a problem and answer the need for different thoughts, background, and experience. My hopes for my college experience are to earn a major, graduate summa cum laude, experience nature, acquire invaluable life experiences, and learn how to live more independently.…

At the beginning of this semester, when Shalin told the class that we would be completing a multicultural action project, I was honestly annoyed at the fact that it would require so much work. In high school, we had to do similar projects and yet I learned absolutely nothing from them. They required immense amount of work and I gained no knowledge. Although, once I was placed in a group with three other hard working students I knew right away it was going to be much better than my past experiences. This multicultural action project was a very eye opening experience and I am very ecstatic that I was able to do something to help make a difference on campus here at Purdue University.…

Oak Hill is a small Appalachian village in southeastern Ohio. Although Oak Hill is a small, quiet community, it lacks diversity in its population. Ninety one percent of the nearly 1600 people, living in Oak Hill, are Caucasian and 100 percent live in a rural setting. Growing up, in the Oak Hill community, had a major impact on how I see equity, inclusion, and diversity. I began school, in the only available district, with about 100 classmates and my graduating class is about the same size.…

I am a second generation Latino-American who is outgoing and friendly. I would contribute to the campus diversity by sharing my Latino culture with the students of NC State. I find that there are many misconceptions about what it means to be a Latino-American. This could benefit the campus by giving them the knowledge of another culture and their beliefs, so they're able to expand their worldly view; and maybe inspire people to visit Latin America and learn, since this is what diversity is about. In addition, I’m outgoing and friendly, so I would encourage other students diversity, to help me expand my knowledge and theirs.…

Introduction: Placement I am volunteering with a program specifically designed to mentor minorities from K-12. The majority of my work consists of college preparation with high school students, but a few times I have been able to work with middle schoolers. First, being a student mentor will give me the chance to help other students transition from high school to college. This process can be difficult and overwhelming, but that is why I think the mentor program is so beneficial for incoming students. As a mentor, I can share my knowledge about the Campbell Business School and other facilities in order to encourage academic and personal success. Furthermore, mentoring gives me the opportunity to enhance both my organization and leadership skills by advising different students coming from various cultural and ethical backgrounds. This program will allow me to meet new people with whom I can share ideas and I myself can also learn from, fostering a sense of belonging in the Campbell community.…
