TOPS Scholarship Program

Great Essays
In fall 2014, I was really excited to start school because it was my senior year at Helen Cox High School. I had been enrolled in the Patrick F. Taylor Opportunity Program for Student (TOPS) for the past four years. TOPS is a scholarship program that guarantees Louisiana students the right to a state-funded college education if they meet all academic requirements. As a child of a single parent home, TOPS was going to give me my chance at a future education and life which would be challenging without it.
From the moment I enrolled at Helen Cox my mother made sure I was taking the TOPS curriculum courses required. Every year, I would meet with my counselor to make sure I was taking all the necessary courses. At senior orientation, I received a copy of my scheduled classes for the year.

I had to tell my mom the news. Bracing myself, I told my mother about the absence of the two courses needed for the TOPS Scholarship. She was angry. Trust me you do not want to make my mother angry. My mom had been involved with the school for the past three years. She constantly met with the teacher and the principal involving my grades, class room management, teacher’s ethics, etc. They knew she was a formidable opponent. I was praying that she could find some way to get me out of this mess. She immediately requested an appointment with the counselor and principal to sort out this misunderstanding.
Unfortunately, they gave her one excuse after another such as we will take care of it, it’s being handled, and don’t worry. They even had the audacity to say I should just pursue the Vo-technical TOPS. At this point, my mom was livid because they were trying to belittle my intelligence. You see Vo-technical tops only provides funding for two years at a community college or technical school but not a four-year college, since they didn’t see me as College/University Material they felt this was the best

I play on the women's collegiate softball team at St. Thomas University. I have been playing softball since I could walk and, along with every other athlete, my dream is to play on the biggest and brightest stage possible. For softball that is the NCAA College World Series. Unfortunately, I don't have the ability to make millions of dollars playing professional softball like many other professional athletes. This is it for me because college is the highest level of softball I will play in my life and I don't want to settle at a school where I know my athletic ability and hard work could get me so much further.…

She continues to harass students for not taking notes and even drives people to cry and leave the room. If a student came back into the room from fleeing with overwhelming emotions, she would demand for them to apologize to everyone in the room. This was a very important part of the project because she said “If you walk into that hallway, you know nothing bad will happen to you out there. Well, black people don’t have that option. They have to live through this everyday of their lives without a way to escape”…

Not everyone has something positive to make them who they are today. However, every so often it’s more common to have something negative, and so it can push you beyond your own boundaries. The person I am today is because of my big sister Thalia. In “Me Talk Pretty One Day” the narrators influence was his teacher, she was rude to her students just for mispronouncing French and judge her students on what they like on the first day of class and she never changed her attitude during the course of the story, I think she was a negative influence on him. I was unfamiliar with the process of choosing the order of courses that would transition me to graduation. As a result, I took several non-required courses, and I even took some of the needed courses, for my degree, out of order. Needless to say, I hit an academic wall that lasted five long semesters. It would have been easier for me to change majors for the sake of graduation, but being in such a predicament only sharpened my perseverance and molded my determination. While these academic complications seemed unbearable at the time, my senior year turned out to be my most challenging year.…

As my senior year recently came closer to an end, it became more clear that I was more unsure than ever as to what I wanted to do in life. School was not something I enjoyed and the thought of furthering my education taking random classes without knowing what I wanted to do seemed depressing. I decided I would enroll in the community college near my home in Alabama and get started on some basic classes. About a month after graduating, I was talking to my mom and she asked me what I wanted to do for a career. Still depressed and feeling anxious about the subject, I told her I really just wanted to go to cosmetology school.…
