TIPS is a program designed to help schools and parents come together to ensure student success. In this program teachers create assignments designed for the students to take home and talk to their family about what they are learning in class and how that particular subject or skill is important in the real world. This in turn makes the student take responsibility for their work and helps the parents engage in meaningful conversation with their child about what their teachers are teaching and what their child is learning without thinking they are supposed to know how to teach their child about that certain subject or skill. Each teacher should introduce the program at the “Open House” scheduled by the school. Examples of the assignments and an explanation of expectations should be given so that parents/guardians are ready when the assignments come home. Before sending the assignments home teachers should also make sure the students are clear on the expectations of the assignments as well. Both students and parents/guardians should be well aware of the fact that although parent involvement is key in the assignment, the student is still the one mainly responsible for completing and submitting the assignment. It should be made clear that at no point are the parents expected to teach any of the subjects covered in the assignments and that the assignments are meant to encourage discussion in the household about the student’s education to help foster positive attitudes towards school and open communication lines between the child, the parent and the teacher. One of the goals mentioned for these assignments is to make them, “enjoyable as well as challenging for students” (NNPS). These assignments should not just be busy work. They should challenge them to really think about the topic, but should also not be so complicated that they are discouraged to complete the assignments because they are too
