TED Speech: Preventing The End Of The World

In the TED speech Can we prevent the end of the world, the speaker Martin Rees expresses his worries and concerns on the future of human-beings. In his opinion, there is an urgent need for human-beings to prevent the destruction of the world since the biggest dangers leading to the end of world are the behaviors of human beings instead of natural disasters. To prevent the end of the world, he suggests research and human intervention is necessary to mitigate the existential risk of human extinction with the prevention center established in the University of Cambridge as an example. Also he contends that with scientific advance and forward movement of human society, it brings us more risks and harms than benefits. He predicts that biotechnology will be misused and even abused in the near future to bring human beings unimaginative harms. Actually NASA long time ago already rejected the validity of the prediction. Well before the 2012 world end prediction, there were many other bold predictions without any plausible evidence involving aliens, earthquake, stock market collapse and others which are extremely unlikely to happen. Almost all of those predictions were proven to be rumors. It seems that all these out of thin air predictions are nothing but products of human fear sentiment. When one has fears over future, he becomes pessimistic on the future perspectives and his judgment on the reality is emotionally biased. All these apply to Martin Rees’s pessimistic opinion on the human future.
