Every year millions of people sit down to watch the the superbowl. Some watch it for the football game, some are there for the food and some watch for the commercials. One commercially particular caught my eye as I was watching the NFL channel. This commercial was an advertisement for T-Mobile. T-Mobile is a company that sells communication services such as cell phones and different data plans. This specific commercial was advertising their new Mobile One plan.
Justin Bieber walks onto the television screen in a good looking suit, a clean haircut, and sophisticated glasses. He introduces himself as the “celebration expert” in a very proper way. He goes on to show the evolution of celebrating. First was the high-five, then Rob Gronkowski, a former football player for the New England Patriots, demonstrated how to throw a football on the ground to celebrate. In a humorous manner the shimmy, shake and the shimmy shake were demonstrated. Cheerleaders and former American wide receiver, Terrell Owens took it to the next level. The biggest advertisement technique was testimonial. Famous pop singer, Justin Bieber, is the main character in the advertisement. Football star, Rob Gronkowski, also know as “Gronk” appears in the commercial, as well as Terrell Ownes, who is another famous football star. Another advertisement technique was transfer. The main idea of the commercial was that you would be celebrating and showing off all your best movies with the new T-Mobile plan. It shows you all the positive qualities and diverts your attention away from the negative. There are many other techniques such as wit and humor, plain folks, snob appeal, glittering generalities, bandwagon and weasel

Super Bowl advertisements are famous for their elaborate productions and are often are more talked about than the event itself. These commercials have become cultural touchstones, but the advertisements have one job and that is to convince a potential customer to buy or use a company’s product or service. The Weight Watchers advertisement is a perfect example of how effective advertisements can be in only a few short seconds. What this commercial is really selling underneath its veneer of supposed helpfulness is emotional manipulation as it preys on people’s insecurities regarding their weight and shame them for eating food that may not be considered healthy. A future hall of fame quarterback trying chips in a supermarket sounds like a decent idea for a Tostitos commercial. This is actually advertising Nationwide Insurance. While this advertisement might entertain the viewer and get the Nationwide jingle stuck in their head, this advertisement for Nationwide is unlikely to be effective because, it doesn’t mention car insurance, and because Peyton Manning doesn’t give any credibility to this advertisement. This advertisement goes through a day in the life of Peyton Manning and doesn’t mention once that this advertisement is for car insurance.…

Although all commercials fall under the same genre, there are many different techniques the author can take, depending on the purpose of the commercial and the audience that the author wants to reach.
