This passage claims that God gave his people 80 years of peace, but when Ehud died the people returned to evil. God decided to discipline them out of love and let King Jabin of Canaan rule Israel for 20 years. In verses four and five of chapter four in the book of Judges the passage introduces Deborah, who is a courageous women, to give the Israelites judgment. She is sent to summon Barak to remind him of God’s command to travel to Mount Tarbor with 10,000 men to fight Sisera. Barak seems powerless and afraid and acts as a coward. In verse eight, he tells Deborah he will only go if she comes with him. He asks her this because he want to be assured that God’s presences will be with him even though God has already promised him that he will win the war. Deborah can’t give him anymore guidance and there is no need for her to accompany him, but she tells him that she will go with him in verse nine. Her condition is that the honor will be given to a women instead of Barak. Deborah symbolizes a powerful women that God raised up to lead Israel because the Israelite men were cowards and declined leadership. Deborah clearly helped lead Israel out of the power of the Canaanites which would define her as a Judge according to Judges 2:16 which states “Judges are said to be the ones who delivered Israel out of the power of those who plundered
