Systems Theory could be a positive and beneficial intervention choice to use with Kima as she could begin to define and then transform her behavioral patterns to be more adaptive, productive behaviors within herself. Multiple conflicting issues are effectively treated with Systems Therapy. A concern that I have is that Kima is estranged from her family as well as the father of her unborn child. The goal of Systems Therapy is for the participants to gain insight into each member’s role as it relates to the healthy functioning of the family as a whole. My initial reaction would probably have been the same as yours if my client had shared with me that she was entertaining suicidal thoughts. Personally, talking about suicide has been a difficult and painful topic, as both my brother and my uncle have taken their own lives. With that being said, I felt your response to suggest behavioral health services, which were immediately available to her, was both positive and supportive. However, my advice to you would be to read all you can on this topic. Also, ask clients what is causing them to feel suicidal. Most importantly, I would get others involved. This should not be viewed as “breaking confidentiality”, but as including all possible resources to get the client help immediately. This could lead to developing a more trusting rapport if your client understands that you care about their well-being and that you will do anything in your power to insure their
