Even though we live in the year 2015 it is discussed that slavery is just part of our history. People fail to realize that slavery still occurs. It 's not just part of our history because many people still suffer from slavery. Slavery is a legal or economic system in which fundamental source of property law applies to humans so that people can be treated as property, and can be owned, bought and sold. The United States established restrictions making it illegal to educate slaves and color lines were habituated to systematically oppress those who were forced into slavery.

Within the article, the issue of established laws created to diminish others is brought to our attention. "Slavemasters understood that their social control of the slaves could not be based solely on physical coercion. Knowledge was power, and virtually all slave codes established in the United States set restrictions making it illegal to teach slaves to read or write." (1830-31) As a reader, this really brought awareness that the government knew that they couldn’t physically imprison slaves. So the government proceeded to make laws to not educate slaves that way they couldn 't think or be informed about the rights they were supposed to have. This issue still occurs today in society, some of the citizens of The United States can not read policies because they don 't have a higher education to understand bills, laws, and policies within the government. Because of this the people who develop or make the policies typically aren 't looking out for the people who aren 't educated enough to understand them. They pass laws to put on a façade that they are helping those people but in all honesty we wouldn 't still have poverty, homelessness, trafficking, and these systems that are failing the people who need it the most. Even though we don 't get a full understanding of what exactly occurred in our history we can go on social media sites and see what the effects of how certain systems are falling. The media we watch is bias and because the government has too much authority its hard to understand what changes we have made in history. Even though we strive to be a better country our policies, laws, and systems still aren 't adequate enough for our society to benefit from.
