The Scientific journal article I chose was about the disease Systematic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), better known as Lupus. “There are two types of lupus. Systemic lupus erythematosus (that) can harm your skin, joints, kidneys and brain and may be fatal. The other type, called "discoid" lupus erythematosus, affects only your skin.” (2015 National Kidney Foundation, 2015) After a while of searching for an article specifically about Discoid Lupus and not finding anything that sparked my interest this journal came about and I found it very knowledgeable. Both forms of Lupus unfortunately affect the skin and its appearance. In this article they talk about a plethora of clinical case studies regarding the safety of getting vaccinations when …show more content…
However they still stress that unless your Lupus is dormant you should stay away from all vaccines. For example Dr. Abu-Shakra states, “Although vaccines are safe clinically, a transient increase of the titers of a wide range of autoantibodies may occur after vaccination.” (Mahmoud Abu-Shakra, 2009) This could be very dangerous to those with the disease Lupus because their immune systems are compromised. While SLE is a disease of the integumentary system it is also an autoimmune disease. This meaning that Lupus will turn “against the body, causing harm to organs and tissues.” (2015 National Kidney Foundation, 2015)
In conclusion after all the testing and research done Dr. Abu-Shakra found very scattered results from a wide variety of vaccinations. All mainly stating that there is no huge side effects to vaccination with active SLE, however “All of the studies reported here agree that live vaccines are not safe and should not be recommended to patients with SLE.” (Mahmoud Abu-Shakra, 2009) That is many studies and scientific teams to all come to the same agreement that this is not safe for those with an active case of Systematic Lupus …show more content…
I had some knowledge of Lupus prior to my research but not nearly as much as I do now. I have three family members with Lupus and now understand that two of them have Discoid Lupus and one has Systematic Lupus Erythematosus. Picking this journal article made me realize a lot of what they may be going through and how important it is for them to consult their doctors or do their own research before they receive any type of vaccination.
This article also lead me to the National Kidney Foundation page where I grew a greater knowledge of everything this disease effects. The information I gathered from there made Dr. Abu-Shakra’s article even more significant to me. The fact that only some of the results could prove that these vaccinations were dangerous and still having everyone agree that it is not beneficial is a huge deal.
This leads me to believe that further research needs to be done with the titer testing or more controlled studies. Although, I understand that it could be unethical to gather the results they are needing to have substantial proof. I plan on reading into this further to see if other Doctors have added to his research. I suppose it is common sense to not put a live virus into your body if your immune system is weakened, but why aren’t the results of these tests proving
