Time To Kill

It’s very easy to have the perfect intentions yet say the wrong thing. One of my best friends Michael from the Marines; whom I have known over twenty-five years; he’s one who has participated in many special occasion, made a strangely inappropriate comment approximately nineteen years ago that I remember to this day, and changed how some people viewed him. We were early in our Military careers and we were both sergeants; he white and I black. We were watching the controversial movie by Schumacher (1996) A Time to Kill; which featured a brutal raping and attempted murder of a young black girl by two racists. Her father murdering the perpetrators while they were in custody. In one of the concluding scene the defense attorney defending the …show more content…
Systematic inadequacies in the social structure specifically on the macro level have pushed the impoverished to the point where there is no hope for tomorrow. It is my humble opinion that the author is shining light on the of having a comprehensive approach to social work broaching the subject of race, ethnicity and culture during the counseling process is the only way to have a joint venture during the counseling session that has the ability to empower the client to be an active part of the counseling session; because the session is about the client and not about the counselor; even if the counselor’s name is on the …show more content…
The fact that I was always the person who my friends sought out for advice, and because for the most part I gave them good advice that helped them overcome many barriers I felt qualified me to become a successful social worker. The advice I would give my friends would be based on what I would do given their situation. The reality is I don’t really know if the advice I gave was really effective. What this impact it will have on my practice as a social worker is in my approach to help. Confront all racial and cultural, dilemmas; which requires me to take the time out to learn as much about the culture, the ethnicity, the community the client comes from, and the courage to step aside if its outside of my scope. In other words, if I know for a fact that there is no way I am going to be able to relate with the client, and I will lack the sensitivity. Culture should not be considered separate from the rest of human existence. Neither should it be viewed apart from counseling (Moodley, 2010). There are many things to consider when taking on a client, the most important detail being, how comfortable is the client with me as the counselor. For example, when my wife went

Firstly, Kumsa, Mfoafo-M’carthy, Oba and Gaasim (2014) put forth anti-Black racism as the type of racism directed against blacks (A-BR) to demonstrate how the Black community experiences the wounds of systemic discrimination as primary targets of racism (p.22). The authors use Funke’s Story: I am a Black Mother to connote the realties of fear and anxiety Black mothers experience every time their Black children walk out the door. This distress is a correlation of how societal structures survey and police Black bodies through reading and seeing them as inherently criminal. The story continues, “Make sure you give them no reason to see the violent Black boy, don’t make them feel intimidated. Your very Black body is intimidating” (Kumsa et al.,…

The importance of understanding privilege and oppression cannot be emphasized enough for those of us in the helping profession. There are so many factors to consider, especially if one plans to work with diverse populations. Author Ryde (2009) describes how "we might, at least for a time, transcend cultural difference [but it is also] important to keep in mind the different worlds we enter when the session ends" (p. 44). The therapist and client of different backgrounds will separate and go back to their lives, which are often very unalike. Perhaps the clients ' financial situations differ vastly from that therapist 's, or their racial identities offer far fewer opportunities than the practitioner 's racial identity offers her.…

Cultural competency is the ability to have an understanding of different cultures points of views and world knowledge. It is important to realize that although people will strive to have cultural competency, it will always be something we are moving toward, not something we can have completely for all cultures. Furthermore, people must understand how their own culture can change their view of other people and create biases that may not be noticeable without this culturally competent awareness. Being open to and learning about how other people view and experience the world and events in it is essential to cultural competency and a necessary part of working with others (Lee, 2006). As counselors, cultural competency is even more notably essential.…

However, discrimination in practice is unintentional and some people may discriminate without being aware of it. This is due to cultural and structural ideologies which has been embedded in our society. In order to avoid discrimination when dealing with crisis, it is imperative that social workers address the crisis with knowledge and understanding of the crisis and the challenges that may occur from discrimination (Thompson, 2011). This is because those who suffer from crisis are considered vulnerable and powerless, therefore there is a chance of them being exploited. Social workers must be able to use their power to help clients move forward in a way that empowers them and gives them control over their lives (Thompson,…
