45 years of silence. The Syrian people lived that long, controlled by the stern Assad regime. Under a dictatorial rule, they lived 45 years under oppression and fear. The fear of reclaiming their right to the freedom from the Assad dictatorship. After long overdue, the tyrannized people of Syria broke their silence on the 15th of March 2011, setting in motion a series of mass protests denouncing the authoritarian system. Emerging first on Syrian grounds and spreading out across the Middle East, the massive street protests engendered the neighboring tyrannical regimes to begin to fall. Yet, as the authoritarian rule of Egypt crumbled, the presidency of Bashar al Assad has stood out, demonstrating remarkable and surprising resilience after nearly five years of Syrian Revolution seeking his downfall. …show more content…
In response to that and after very little patience, the regime answered with repressive force in order to calm the protests before these latter start considering the use of violence. Contrary to what the regime was hoping to accomplish by doing so, the determination of the Syrian protesters only grew stronger. As one would predict, while the rebel groups started taking up arms and standing up violently to the security forces and Syrian army, the uprisings rapidly resulted in bloodshed and led to an inevitable Civil War. The conflict slowly advanced towards incredible complexity, involving those for versus those against the regime, Alawites versus Sunni, intransigent rebels looking to instore an Islamic caliphate etc. In fact, the situation in Syria has become so much complicated that even the West and the International Community are now unwilling to intervene, discouraged by the consequences of taking part into such a messy
