According to Reverend Nadim Nassar, he explains that these minorities have been living in harmony and stayed loyal to their homeland, besides some religious disputes and foreign occupations. For many years, Syria has been a battlefield for foreign powers. After a long, hard battle, the Syrians gained their independence in 1946 from the Ottomans and from the French Mandate. To secure Syria from any more foreign occupations, Christians, Druze, Alawites, Kurds, and the minority Sunnis, who “regard themselves as the orthodox and traditionalist branch of Islam”, along with the help of other minorities, have tried to protect this nation. Sadly, their efforts were not enough and a small faction of Alwaite military leaders took Syria’s power away from her. This was a major turning point in Syria’s history because this is the first time Syria has ever been ruled by their “own”. The Assad family has now come into power. Since Syria is being ruled by “one of their own”, the Syrian people hoped that the Assads would bring the country stability and continue their freedom. Their hopes quickly died three years later when Hafez al- Assad teamed up with the Egyptian President Anwar al Sadat to rage war against Israel. Not only did this war weaken Syria and left her venerable, the war destroyed the country’s relations with the Middle East as well. Before the country could return to a normal state, their neighbor Lebanon was engaged in a civil war. Lebanon had to rely strongly on their allies, such as Syria, to fight their own proxy war, which led into the seventeen year Lebanese Civil War. Syria’s ruling minority brought the country directly and indirectly into the middle of the bloodshed through military intervention. Since Assad was putting all of his focus on foreign politics, such as the war with Israel, his family members and his Intelligence Services were having to run the country. The Lebanese Civil War caused smuggling rings and black markets to start forming across the Lebanese- Syrian border and this benefited many people. These practices where being supported by those in power, and since trade was firmly controlled by Assad’s regime, this marked the beginning of the corruption that
