Syphillis is a bacterial infection usually spread by sexual contact that starts as a painful sore. It can have a serious outcome when left untreated, but is also simple to cure with the right treatment given by your primary doctor. Syphillis is contracted by direct contact with a syphillis sore during either vaginal, anal or oral sex. Sores can be found on or around the penis, rectum, vagina, on the lips or in the mouth. This form of STD can also be spread from an infected mother to her baby.

Symptoms of this disease vary by stage. There are four different stages. The primary stage, secondary stage, latent stage and the tertiary stage. During the primary stage, it is possible to notice single or multiple sores. Because the sore is painless, it is easy to go unnoticed. In the secondary stage, skin rashes or mucous membrane (sores) in the mouth, vagina or anus become noticeable. Rashes can look rough, red, or reddish brown on the palms of your hands and feet. Other symptoms in this stage include, headaches, fever, swollen feet, weight loss and muscle aches. The latent stage includes no sign or symptoms of the disease. It is still among the person's body, just not visible. There is no treatment at this time.
