Workshop Synthesis
Please describe how you synthesized your knowledge throughout the workshop and incorporated it into your group’s PLW. For example, what were your big takeaways from the workshop, and how did you use this knowledge to teach your classmates? The biggest take-away from the workshop that we were able to use and apply to our PLW dealt with creating an effective activity and demonstration. From our various presentations as well as our experiences with activities in the class, we tried to design activities that were both fun and important. One of the biggest elements we hoped to incorporate into our PLW was discussion. Our activity is designed to have students discuss with each other as well as discuss with us. While this serves as a judge of how much the students may or may not know about our topic, it, more importantly, pushes the students to think more critically about their own biases as well as push them to engage with unfamiliar material. The bedrock powerpoint was made to enhance our knowledge on how children learn and become who they are, whether they make the good choices in life, or bad ones. The three main important points that were made in it was brain architecture, serve and return, and toxic stress. These 3 points all determine how a child’s foundation starts and how their experiences in life affect how they will become. I thought this was an eye opener to how kids learn and form their own personality. When I first heard of brain architecture, it made so much sense to me.…

In addition to relieving this obligation from the instructor, I reviewed student work for content, format, and overall quality with notes and corrections. Following this, I then organized it for easy analysis by Professor Roberts. By doing so, I improved my ability to evaluate and critique the written work of others. Having multiple assignments to read through also helped me compare who possessed favorable writing skills and who the weaker writers were. When reviewing their work, I looked for grammatical errors, to help their writing improve, formatting issues —as it would hurt their grade if incorrect— and content issues, to make sure they were addressing the main points of the assignments in order to grasp communication studies concepts.…

My experience with the Crossroads Community Center’s “Practicing Inclusive Excellence”, or “PIE” workshop, was an extremely positive one. Paige Bolden, the facilitator, and coordinator of intercultural engagement and her intern Kelsey used a series of group activities to teach us not only about ourselves but also gain a better understanding of our class as a whole. The workshop encouraged us to be open-minded and to not make rash assumptions about others without knowing them. The first day of the workshop we took all of the chairs in the room and made a large circle so everyone could see, and we didn’t feel like we were being “lectured” at.…

The way I incorporated the content I learned from my issues and delivery course into my field practicum is by, being a well active listener, being patient, being an observer, and being able to facilitate group sessions. When it came to the staff meetings I had to make sure I listen to all the information that were given to me so that I would be well prepared and equip to be beneficial to the students. Another skill I want to discuss is patience, patience is important because when the student’s do not understand their homework assignments they tend to get frustrated. Usually, I find diverse ways to present the problem to the students so that they can find a solution to their problem. I also encourage the students to take their time and use…
