Synthesis Essay Pennies

Pennies have been in US history for a very long time. They have been with us for years in different shapes and sizes. The biggest argument though is if they should stay with us any longer. Pennies in general don’t cost a lot in currency and for it to be considered a lot, you would need many pennies. Why have pennies when we have currency like quarters or dollars which are much easier to pay with? Pennies may not at all need to be used anymore and should just stop being manufactured all together because of this. After all, pennies are the things we find in couch cushions and at the bottom of our wallets. If they weren’t that worthless, we wouldn’t put them anywhere so carelessly. Pennies are a currency that doesn’t cost much if used. As said …show more content…
We only really use pennies for example when, “we store them in jars, throw them away in water fountains, or refuse them as change” states source 1. These things aren’t that important and if we were as careless as throwing pennies into a water fountain, they probably don’t mean so much to us. Even though we hardly use them, they take up a lot of space to store in large quantities. As source #1 states, “Pennies take up too much space on our dressers at home,” which is unnecessary when we can store other things in it’s place that are more important. So in other words, pennies are used and stored carelessly away, which proves that we don’t need them that much. Maybe it was more helpful in the past but now we have dollars and credit cards which are easier to store and pay with. Not only do pennies take up unnecessary space, but they also cost a lot more money to manufacture than they are worth. According to source 4, it costs “more than 2.4 cents to produce one penny” while a penny only costs 1 …show more content…
Not just that, but a waste of money that we could be using to make other more important things. Some may beg to differ, though, that pennies actually do have some sort of significance. They argue that pennies can be used to raise money for charity. As source 3 states, WMS “raised over $3000 in one week!” which was done by people donating their pennies. Even though it’s true that this middle school raised money all because of pennies, they even say to themselves that, “Pennies don’t really matter” which is why people are so okay with getting rid of so much. If you were to give money in dollars to charity, most likely it wouldn’t be as much as if you were giving pennies away since the dollar costs more which is what Source 3 is trying to argue. It even states in source 3 that, “If the school had organized a dime or quarter drive, they probably would have not raised as much money” which just proves the point that there is change with bigger worth than the penny that people aren’t as willing to give up. Ultimately, pennies should stop being made to free up more space for us and also save money. Something so small and worth so little doesn’t make any sense to

Some items, such as the penny for example, have had a fair share of debate revolving around whether or not it still has a place in the modern day. Perhaps 100 years ago, the penny was more valuable, as items bought at shops were worth a penny. Yet, that time has come and gone, and in turn, the penny itself is best left in the past. In today’s age pennies should be abolished because they are worthless, consume too much resources, and waste too much time. First, pennies are…

over the economic value and need of the penny. The penny is the United States’ coin with the smallest value---only one cent. Recently, many have been discussing getting rid of the penny. It’s a waste of money and materials to produce and they’re easily forgotten more often than used. After much deliberation, I can conclude that penny is insignificant to our economic system and getting rid of it would benefit the United States’ economy. Interestingly, the penny actually costs more to produce than it…

account. In the fast moving world Americans presently live in, their time has become their most precious asset, leaving no moments to count their change to an exact value. Due to this, the existence of the penny has become a marginal inconvenience of the modern day. Altogether, the American penny is no longer practical or necessary in a world where time is money, and time is being wasted counting a cent at a time.
