It is through the consequences and experiences of a discovery where an individual makes an attempt to conceal or forget the events of the past, but find it impossible to suppress it completely, as the discovery made is confronting and provocative. Through the dramatic text Away by Michael Gow and the poem Refugee Blues by W.H. Auden, the notions of loss, time, and nature are explored. These ideas consequently lead to transformed perceptions of life and human experiences as a whole and thus a rediscovery. These ideas are further explored through various language forms utilising both dramatic and literary techniques that amplify the concept of discovery and its effect on groups and individuals.…
Love and Hope are Infinitely More Powerful than Hate and Fury: A Response to Kovály’s Under A Cruel Star: A Life in Prague 1941-1968 Heda Margolius Kovály’s memoir, Under A Cruel Star: A Life in Prague 1941-1968, tells a story of love and loss, of hope and horror, of life as a persecuted Czech Jew under the Nazi and Communist regimes. Her account emphasizes courage in the face of fear, and it speaks of the facts behind these regimes, as she knows them to be true. In this book, Kovály describes life in a communist state in the Eastern Bloc as incredibly unjust and intolerable, a contradiction to the ways Communism promised to heal the wounds of World War II through a strong sense of community and pursuing happiness with non-material things.…

Although the movie “A Good Lie” and the book “ A Long Walk to Water” are very similar, they also have many differences. The stories talk about different perspectives of the war and how each of the characters went through that war and what they did when the Northern Governments destroyed their villages. They were forced to run away from their burnt villages in essence that if they stayed there, they would be killed. The characters are part of The Lost Boys in both stories and are on their way to the refugee camp.…
Again, in this case, it’s a difficult task to due to the high conflict level in the camp from the Kenyan government. Another strategy of this intervention is to educate the camps how to keep and maintain clean water as well as have small gardens that provide a supplementary food source to the food rations they received for each block. One key thing that the book discussed many time was Somali’s value of sharing with others. Trying to maintain that value may prevent further shattering of…
Storytelling is a way to communicate to society in a way that creates a relatable instance such that the reader can see themselves, or a version of themselves, within the story. Storytelling also is a way to demonstrate the struggles of other individuals within a society that a reader my not experience directly, but can nonetheless gain a broader understanding of different struggles within society. Although there are many ways to utilize storytelling techniques, I will apply the approach of Rites of Passage to three of the novels we’ve read this semester. The Rites of Passage that I will be analyzing are those within the stories, Houseboy, Woman at Point Zero, and A Walk in the Night. In these stories I will argue that through the characters ', Toundi, Firdaus, and Willieboy, Rites of Passage there is a physical altercation that caused a stunt in their ability to grow emotionally as a character, thus disabling them to continue to their ultimate stage of their reincorporation into society.…
Survival and vulnerability are two themes which appear totally independent of one another, yet both are universal human experiences which often coexist and influence an individual’s behaviour. It is human instinct to survive in dangerous situations, to protect oneself from potential harm. It is also human instinct to hide one’s vulnerability from others out of fear of those vulnerabilities being used against them. In Russell Banks’s short story “Lobster Night” he explores the relationship between gender politics, survival, and vulnerability when Stacy and Noonan reveal personal stories of weakness and survival to each other. Despite this newfound connection built between the two characters when both Stacy and Noonan expose their vulnerability,…

Emmanuel Jal’s retelling of the traumatic events that he encountered in the Second Sudanese Civil War gave a powerful message while also being rhetorically genius. Jal is an incredibly skilled writer, which is impressive since having been affected by the war since the age of seven, he must have had to work extremely hard in school and even after to get himself to this level. His words cut deep as you feel his pain and loss, soothe each time he finds a way around “the rocks in the road”, and encourage as we take notes on how to be the kind of people that give all we can to others and then more. Jal’s use of repetitive words simulated the experience of trauma as the graphic scenes and phrases whirl around and around inside his head while he tries…
Would survival be selfish if you were put into a situation like the holocaust? When death camps and gas chambers were all you could see? Or would surviving that dangerous horror filled time be a miracle in its place? Because surviving a situation that you have been put in, you might only be able to see getting out of it. Survival doesn’t require selfishness if your life is at risk as well as others, if you are really struggling and doing everything in your will power to survive.…

A wide frame shot of Raye crying followed by a distant shot of the moon accentuates her empathy towards Maisara “I’ve had problems carrying pregnancies through…I do know where she’s coming from…” explores how by experiencing the same situations as others, individuals are able to empathize. In addition to this idea, although it is the participants who discover from their physical experience to Jordan, Congo, Kenya and Iraq, the film technique of manipulating the documentary form allows for responders to evaluate the way we live our lives through their experiences. Hence, “crossfire” and Go Back parallel the notion that it is through the process of discovery and understanding, the enriching both new perceptions of self and the world around can be reached. Both texts demonstrate how both experience in discoveries bring greater knowledge about the individual and their world. “Crossfire” depicts the fundamental link between an emotional desire and an expedition to discover the refugees’ experiences, a discovery that shapes Stefan’s identity.…

In the book, Life of Pi, the protagonist’s survival depends greatly on his ability to forget time. Throughout the novel, the effects of that capability are portrayed as good because Pi believes he “survived because I [Pi] forgot even the very notion of time”. It is because of this skill that Pi is able to manage his grief and focus on his survival. His ordeal at sea is one that cannot be survived without a combination of soundness of mind, hope, and hard work, all things he cannot manage if he lets himself absorb the extent of the calamity befallen him. Forgetting time makes such events less palpable, which in turn allows him to focus on survival.…
