“It’s no secret that schools across the country regularly monitor students’ social media pages” (Source 4). A controversial topic of today is how some schools regulate their students’ social media pages to help prevent cyberbullying. Social media is a widely used form of communication today. “But there is little evidence of increased social media surveillance leading to a reduction in school violence” (Source 4). Ignoring the facts, some people argue that social media monitoring increases the safety of students in schools, but at what cost? The trust and respect between the school and the student? Schools do not have the right to monitor their students’ social media because it is an invasion of privacy and not in the school’s domain. The Fourth Amendment in the Bill of Rights provides American citizens with the right to privacy. It states we have the right to be secure in our persons, houses, papers, effects, and against unreasonable searches or seizures. When a school district hires “a private firm to comb through the cyber lives of its 14,000 middle and high school students” (Source 2), they are violating this right. If a student’s social media should be regulated because of cyber bullying tendencies the school should notify this student’s parents. The best thing that the school system could do to prevent cyber bullying is to communicate with their students’ parents so that their parents can teach them to be careful of what they say online. Studies show children are more likely to listen to their parents than any other adult. Communication between the school and the parents is the solution to cyber bullying. The school should not be focused on monitoring their students’ social media, but instead on preparing them for a bright
