Coldplay’s song “Viva la Vida” tells the tale of a man who had power but now he “sleep[s] alone” and “sweep[s] the streets [he] used to own” because he lost that power (Source C). After losing power, his future looks bleak. He hoped for a good future, and, had he been successful, he would have had it. Unfortunately, there is a flip side to the desire for power. Power leads to corruption, and this corruption can “spiral out of control” and lead to a leader’s downfall (Anchor Text). This is made clear in Coldplay’s “Viva la Vida” when the singer states “People couldn't believe what I'd become/Revolutionaries wait/For my head on a silver plate” and how he no longer is king (Source C). Because he had become so corrupt, the revolution overthrew him.
The desire for power can also cause one to act in such ways that are viewed as evil. A prime example of this is Gollum’s desire for the One Ring in Lord of the Rings. He fights so hard to get the ring, and he even bites off Frodo’s finger to steal it from him, just so he can have its power back. However, he also dives into the fires of Mount Doom to save it, and is burned to death (Source D). If he had never had that desire for power, he would have never faced such a terrible
