Grades
There are a lot of discussions that are taking place in classrooms based on the way students are graded. In some cases, students feel as if their final grades do not represent their overall performance in the classroom, but test scores are a major factor in our grades and one slip may cause your grade to drop unfairly. Our final grades in all of our courses are heavily dependent on our midterms and final test scores and that is no secret. Imagine if a student were to fail their midterm or final that is a huge blow to their final grade towards that subject and students know that if they fail some sort of test especially a midterm or final their average most certainly drops. Students see a teacher as a “commodities broker with something they want – a grade” (Wiesenfeld 17) and not as a fountain of wisdom where knowledge can be absorbed from. Student just want to get the grade they want, so that they do not “flunk out” or so they do not “lose their scholarship.” Students have “learned that they can get by without hard work and real talent” (Wiensenfeld 17). Since students know that they are not required to put in effort to pass they do not. Teachers need to “follow through on their threats” (Sherry 16) and fail students who do not put in the effort. Sherry used her personal story about her son who got motivated and put in effort after he realized he would fail his senior English course. Sherry believes that policy has worked in the past and will continue to do so. Teachers should no longer pass students who have not learned the material. This will only harm them in the long run.…

Some college students think that they cannot fail. Students that did well in high school, think getting a bad grade is the end of the world. It is common to get a bad grade in college occasionally, but students think they are invincible denying it will happen to them. They need to be prepared that college can be hard for some people and a bad grade is not the end of the world. According to The University of Alabama’s webpage titled “Causes of Failure in College,” students cannot take criticism. In high school, it is the teacher’s job to grade and critic the work. The trouble is that many students do not know how to evaluate their work. They frequently overestimate their understanding of college material and the quality of their written work.…

ABC news interviewed a business student that came to the conclusion that when it comes to grades, “Nobody looks at how you got it”, what matters is seeing that ‘A’ on the assignment. The ticket to success in life for many students is grades. It is how one makes it to the next step in their academic career. To some, it matters so much that they would risk being academically dishonest and breaking school rules to get to that prestigious college or program.…

They say college opens an endless amount of doors for you but lately it seems as though they close more doors than open. Going to college is one of the most expensive things that an American citizen will pay for throughout their lifetime as paying student loans off takes years, even decades. As tuition rises, the economic standpoint of the United States is crippling and will cause an inevitable market crash with the $1.2 trillion owed in student loans. Not only is college unaffordable but somewhat unnecessary. "I don't know how many acquaintances of mine have graduated from college with a "business' or "criminal justice" degree and absolutely no idea how to get a job with it." Source F. This quote adds by describing the state that colleges leave students in.…

After finding which topic I wanted to work on from Intelligence squared I began preliminary research on the Common Core. Coming up with a question was far harder than I anticipated it would be. The internet contains a mass of information on the Common Core and multiple areas that could be questioned. At first, I questioned how the common core would bring up American schools to the same level as other countries, considering those in support claim it’s at an international level and will support us in competing internationally. However, the further I delved into the research the more questions came up. Do schools with what could be considered higher standards than the common core need to lower their standards? How will the schools be funded for the mass amount of new material they need to buy? Students with test anxiety, which remains as a common and a real problem, will have difficulties. How will they be compensated in the new rigorous testing environment created by the common core? The tests are a large component in determining a student’s skill. If that student is talented in all areas, except for testing, will they be evaluated as a “problem”…

My opening argument will be the lastly noted aforementioned. If students knew they were being graded on the strict basis of pass or fail, what would be the objective in achieving a grade higher than 70 which accomplishes all being sought? Why put in the extra study time and effort if an A+ paper carrys the same weight as a student whose paper slimly met minimum criteria for passing? I believe the answer is: they would not. Students would begin putting out minimum…

As more young adults enter the classroom, the hot topic of whether or not they should be doing so emerges. Standardized tests can only measure so many goals of the educational system. Some goals such as the motivation to learn, the ability to apply school learning to real life events, and the ability to work in groups are not amendable towards large-scale testing. Due to this, students may begin to despise attending school. Students have become so terrified of failing that they would rather skip class, causing them to fall behind on everything else. Some students may also turn towards cheating out of the fear of failure.…

When a student is evaluated, they see what their weaknesses are so that they can receive help in those particular areas. After a student takes a standardized test, parents receive a copy of the test scores. If the student’s parents see that their child falling behind in a particular subject, they can seek out additional resources to help the student catch back up in their class. Test scores can also give the students a sense of confidence if they scored really high. It can also motivate the students to study harder, so they can improve their score, if it was not as high as they wanted. Both ultimately improve performance in…

As any student knows, grades are reflective of their accomplishments in a given class. However, grades mean much more to students than whether they know the material or not. Grades mean whether or not someone will get into their college of choice, whether or not they have to retake that class they had failed as a result of an emotional semester, whether or not they are hired for a position against someone who graduated with a higher grade-point average (GPA). Students are under more duress than ever to be academically excellent because of the mounting pressure in the American education system. This pressure is due to GPA inflation and expectations of above-average academic performance. Because of this increased stress, students often have poor academic performance, changes in social and personal behavior, and even physical and mental illnesses.…
