Midterm Portfolio Reflection

The English portion of this program reassured me that my AP English classes that I took in high school had prepared me well enough for college writing. However, I was still a little unsure exactly how much writing was expected due to the fluctuation in course experience due to professor variance. However, after attending the first couple of classes I was once again reassured that I was prepared for this basic English class. I felt fairly confident on the work I put into the Midterm Portfolio. I believed it to be A or B level work. I found I received an A- when my portfolio was returned, and I was happy with that. I decided to use paper two for this portfolio. I thought it was a strong paper, however I believed I could develop paper one to be stronger. I ended up having trouble adding enough information while keeping the added text meaningful when nearing the page minimum. I did not want any pointless filler content. I eventually achieved a good balance in the paper that I thought …show more content…
It was by far the most challenging of the three essays as well as my worst essay. I wrote mine over technology and how it effects humans. I found two articles related to the topic. One supported technology usage and had support from studies. The other article pointed out some of technologies greatest drawbacks. My synthesis of the two said that we need a healthy balance of technology. I drew points and factual information from both articles to form my synthesis, however it did not turn out as strong as I had hoped for. I found myself using filler information just to complete the essay and that is always a bad sign. My first two essays were exponentially more well written than this

In completing the course English 112 at Robeson Community College, I have found myself with a new found understanding how to write various genres, and do them well. Newly, I have experienced the handling of opinion writing, research writing, and direct analyzation writing. These concepts greatly helped me achieve the knowledge of love in writing. This class had an overall positive affect on the individual I now am, and created a way in which I read an assignment, sit down, and promptly beginning work. In this class, aspects such as research, analyzation, and procrastination hit the closest to who I was before enrolling and completing this course.…

The writing expected from college courses is one that most are unfamiliar with. Although students learn basic English skills throughout grade school and up to high school, most of the advanced steps are forgotten by the time the student is to enter college. Paired with this, are the nontraditional students, who haven’t studied advanced academic language for long periods of time. Professors are expecting students of all kinds of study to have a high academic vocabulary and high writing skill. Often times a gap in remedial writing courses within the first semester or so.…

During my first year at Spelman College, I have not necessarily acquired any new writing skills. However, I have definitely sharpened three imperative writing skills, including: forming my ideas, reasoning, and synthesis (based on readings and discussions) to develop the content of my essays, integrating sources and evidence that corroborate my beliefs, and making my writing more clear and concise. In addition, I still stand in the process of learning to write well under the pressure of time constraints. To illustrate my points, At Spelman, I have been required to read and discuss for every single class I have enrolled in.…

Prior I had little experience with formulating research type papers. I was able to learn about credible sources and I was able to learn how to use the library’s online database which was supportive for my papers. Even the books proved to be valuable resources, especially the Norton Field Guide. This particular book taught me how to properly analyze a text and it provided a series of steps that makes understanding a passage much simpler. In fact, I even wrote out the steps in a summarizing format for future reference, and I’m certain I will make use of them.…

Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…

When moving onto college, students must be enrolled in an English class. Whether it is remedial or a college level, they must take it. Although I did not have enough chance to write essay before, and this essay’s format was not familiar with me, I tried to follow the direction from my instructor, Mary, and tried to understand as much as I could. To be honest, I was terrified of jumping into my fall English 102 class. If you were to ask me about my high school writing experience, I would tell you that I did not have much experience. We did not have any classes at my school that were specifically writing classes. At my high school, we just had regular English classes where we would occasionally do a few papers in. My English teacher senior year was a great person, but did not necessarily teach us a lot about proper styles of writing papers. Coming into college English, I did not feel well prepared with what to expect for a college level writing class.…
