Whether it be on the side of a bus advertising a new film or millions of annoying block up pages on a popular website, advertising is a technique used by companies worldwide to inform consumers about their products. However, advertising also draws people into their products and eventually making them purchase them. Advertising is great way to promote useful products, however, advertisements generally make the viewer want things they don’t necessarily need and so it benefits the company, but harms the consumer in the long run. There is no argument that some things that aren’t healthy are strategically advertised to make people want them, even if they may be harmful. Companies like Marlboro and Camel invest millions of dollars into advertising their products mainly targeting teenagers and young adults. Even though they can’t necessarily legally purchase them, it subconsciously puts in their minds that smoking is something that’s common and it is socially acceptable, also “encouraged the incorrect belief that the majority of people smoke.” (Source B.) “I never did figure out what they were advertising” (Source F) states. The best type of advertising is the one where the viewer can’t specifically tell what it is aimed for. As Source F states, “People buy flour without any advertisement, soda on the other hand… who would want to pay $1.00 for sugared water?” Advertising can lead to the effects of masking the actual product by making it seems interesting to the viewer causing them to want it. Perhaps a certain brand of cloths seen on TV commercial, subconsciously you’d refer back to that commercial and would be more likely to pick that brand than over another.
