Synthesis Analysis: When I Have Fears That I May Cease To Be

Looking back on the semester and the essays I drafted, the one that stood out the most was the synthesis analysis essay. It was in this essay that I studied and analyzed John Keats, “When I Have Fears That I May Cease to be” and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s, “Mezzo Cammin”. My main purpose was to assess and reflect on common themes between the two poems, as well as finding background information that aided the authors. By taking this approach, I was able to discover direct links into the explanation I wanted my piece to present the given audience. Using the added aide of this strategy, I felt as though I achieved success in understanding the Exploration and Argumentation learning outcome. Beyond advancing my skills in analyzing text in general, …show more content…
No matter the type of paper I’m working on, I tend to write towards a personal level. One reason for this is that I enjoy when people write things that make one feel like they know them. This drafts a goal for me to create pieces of work that will cause a similar feeling and reaction. While being able to do this is important to me, I have learned how careful I need to be as well. In creating the synthesis essay, I tried to give ample amount of background information to provide my audience with the same reasoning and ideas I had in mind. I chose this approach partly because if I were on the other side of such a paper, mapping out the analysis and reasoning could assist in reception. In essays such as the research piece, I sometimes felt as though I was simply going through the motions while writing it. I believe the reasoning for this is that it lacked any major connection to myself and then that came across to the …show more content…
One could argue that the knowledge and understanding I obtained about these appeals was the most valuable piece of information I took away from the course last semester. No matter the form of writing, being able to take cues to identify with a reader emotionally or establishing a sense of credibility sets a paper apart. Based on these tools, I really looked towards these appeals when studying the two poems for this analysis. While last semester I worked with these appeals in my Literacy Narrative, this semester displayed how widespread these skills could be used. Where before I had used rhetorical appeals to grab my audience and get them to relate to my own history, I now had to captivate an audience on the deep thinking behind poetry. In the end, I still tried to extend this use into letting my audience understand my thought process in exploring others

This week, our class had the chance to read four interesting poems of Lines Written a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey, We Real Cool, Mad Girl’s Love Song, and Hanging Fire. Each of these poems highlight the important role that imagery and other poetic devices play into an interpretation of a poem and how crucial it is to understand the perceptive of a poem’s speaker. The poem I enjoyed the most this week was Hanging Fire by Audre Lorde. On the surface, Hanging Fire is about a 14 year-old who struggles with typical adolescent things such as bad skin, boy problems, school dances, and braces. However, once we re-read the poem and took the time to analysis it, it because quite clear that teenaged problems are not the only things troubling the speaker.…

Overall the essays that we have read this semester have been good. There are a few essays in particular that I think benefited me the most was “The Time to Act I Now” written by Al Gore, “Just Walk on By” written by Brent Staples, and the “Letter from Birmingham Jail” written by Martin Luther King. These essays have benefited me in a numerous amount of ways in which I am going to explain how their writing styles helped me become a better writer. Staples helped me a lot in which he taught me to explain my reasoning fully so that the audience know exactly what I am talking about. Another thing that Staples taught me was to explain the setting of the story in full detail so the readers can visualize what’s actually happening in the story this…

Throughout the first semester of College Composition, I wrestled with three essays, all differing in format and content. The first was a narrative that reflected our educational experience. After this came an analysis of a visual text, followed by a research paper. The narrative was the easiest to write; however, I acquired important skills for writing the other two, which were in a less familiar format. With the three essays, I learned about my own writing skills and habits concerning development and critical thinking, time management, and organization.…

Surviving English Comp 1 Writing Class Writing is one thing I hate the most. It was hard to write an essay for the first time because I did not have the knowledge or concept of this writing style. Before this class, I thought I knew what writing was all about by expressing my thoughts, ideas and feeling. I know now that I had the wrong concept on how to write. I can express my thoughts, ideas and feeling, but if I put them in the wrong contents it does not lead the reader to the point of the essay.…

As an English learner, I have experienced many challenges during the learning process, yet I haven’t given up my hope. Writing had always been one of my difficult challenges, but the desire inside of me learning new things always push me to accept the challenges. In fact, learning a new language stays always challenging to every person. However, English 111 class has taught me many things that I never thought I will do it. The first assignment that we did a reading response to Anne Lamott’s “Shitty First Draft” has taught me that people learn from their mistakes, and nobody is perfect.…

Before entering English 101, I was not sure what to expect in my first college English. Teachers from my high school would tell all of their students that in college the papers would be up to 30 pages long and that the professors would grade very hard. English is a subject that I have never been too good at so, coming into college English I was very nervous. I have struggled in the past to perceive the correct tone and organization in my writing.…

At the beginning of the semester, I viewed myself as a creative writer. After attending this class I realized that there is a lot more that goes into writing an essay, or a research paper, than just creativity alone. I have learned that it is very important to be aware of my strengths and weaknesses in my writing. Taking this class has helped me understand the strengths and weaknesses in my writing skills, and it has given me the opportunity to strengthen the areas in which I was weak. An example of this is that I have become aware of my grammar and spelling errors as the semester progressed.…

English Composition I taught me a lot about myself, including how to be a better college student, through the process of writing. At the beginning of the year, I was not very excited about having to write argumentative papers. This is because I did not care enough about the assigned topics to have an opinion. But, I did learn a lot that I would not have known otherwise from having to research information about the topics I chose to write about. For example, in paper #2, I wrote about the niqab and how I believe that it is oppressive to women.…
