Looking back on the semester and the essays I drafted, the one that stood out the most was the synthesis analysis essay. It was in this essay that I studied and analyzed John Keats, “When I Have Fears That I May Cease to be” and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s, “Mezzo Cammin”. My main purpose was to assess and reflect on common themes between the two poems, as well as finding background information that aided the authors. By taking this approach, I was able to discover direct links into the explanation I wanted my piece to present the given audience. Using the added aide of this strategy, I felt as though I achieved success in understanding the Exploration and Argumentation learning outcome. No matter the type of paper I’m working on, I tend to write towards a personal level. One reason for this is that I enjoy when people write things that make one feel like they know them. This drafts a goal for me to create pieces of work that will cause a similar feeling and reaction. While being able to do this is important to me, I have learned how careful I need to be as well. In creating the synthesis essay, I tried to give ample amount of background information to provide my audience with the same reasoning and ideas I had in mind. I chose this approach partly because if I were on the other side of such a paper, mapping out the analysis and reasoning could assist in reception. In essays such as the research piece, I sometimes felt as though I was simply going through the motions while writing it. One could argue that the knowledge and understanding I obtained about these appeals was the most valuable piece of information I took away from the course last semester. No matter the form of writing, being able to take cues to identify with a reader emotionally or establishing a sense of credibility sets a paper apart. Based on these tools, I really looked towards these appeals when studying the two poems for this analysis. While last semester I worked with these appeals in my Literacy Narrative, this semester displayed how widespread these skills could be used. Where before I had used rhetorical appeals to grab my audience and get them to relate to my own history, I now had to captivate an audience on the deep thinking behind poetry. In the end, I still tried to extend this use into letting my audience understand my thought process in exploring others
