Every day, I try to listen to a new piece of music. Whether it be a string group, unaccompanied choir, or even a percussion consort, I believe that by doing this, so much can be learned from just listening. About the mid-month of July, I came across this piece of music. I thought it was extremely fun and quirky at the same time! I had continued to listen to it, read some background information on the piece, and do a small amount of study on the work.…

Organized crime also affected Chicago. “Chicago was notorious for its prostitution industry” (Mappen 11). The rise of organized crime also led to the rise of Chicago’s notoriety. “As alcohol was sold all around them, police officers, public officials, judges, and politicians took bribes or looked the other way” (Blumenthal 3). Organized crime led to the corruption of politicians and public officials in Chicago, which is still present today.…

This piece is based on pitch set classes 01346, 0124, and 014 as well as their respective inversions and transformations. The piece is set in an ABA’-like form and explores the versatility of the clarinet. In the beginning, the piano introduces the theme of 01346 and following measure presents a chord of 0124 with the melody harking back to tonality by using an unprepared suspension. These set classes form the A part of the piece.…

On Monday, October 16th, I was able to attend a choir festival in Cartwright Hall. This event brought high schoolers from all over northeast Ohio to Kent State for just a couple of days and taught them music that they would then perform. The concert ran rather smoothly. It started off with Kent State’s very own Nova Jazz Singers singing three songs.…

Upon attending the International Chamber Music Festival Concert, a certain ecstatic vibe could be felt as the performers walked on stage with their musical instruments. The virtuoso’s performed in pieces that contained trios, duets, and quintets; showing the concentration they required when listening to each other. When working on Chamber Music, much of the melody jumps around from instrument to instrument, show casing various solos and much of the instruments having to coincide with each other to carefully listen for the melody. The first performance, was from Mosaics, by Eric Ewazen, only introducing the first movement: I. Barcarolle. The performers Dr. Susan Berdahl (flute), Dr. Xiaohu Zhou (bassoon), and Dr. James Moyer (marimba), all played outstandingly and show cased exactly how Chamber Music is meant to be played.…

When you hear the word band when related to music, what do you think of? Is it a small group of friends playing in a garage, or a huge group of people putting on a concert at school? Merriam Webster defines a band as “a group of persons, animals, or things; especially: a group of musicians organized for ensemble playing.” To finish out the semester I went to one last concert, the SIUE Wind Symphony and Concert Band.…

The music and the performances were extremely enjoyable, as I felt overwhelmed and intrigued at what I was hearing. It made me think about my time and experiences in my high school band and choir; as well as my recent time and experience in Essex County College’s Choir with Mr. Alston, and the performances I had to give on stage. There is something about the stage that I really enjoy; the sudden thrill, a sense of accomplishment, as well as the sudden fright of just coming out onto the stage with people waiting and staring in awe. The audience really seemed to enjoy each and every performance given at the Symphonic Wind Ensemble Concert at Kean…

My experience presenting choreography and performing in the 2017 Xperimental Dance Concert was challenging, yet stimulating. I believe choreographing for any type of venue is an intimate and vulnerable task, and this venue enabled the audience to witness every aspect of the pieces in the concert from many diverse angles; which caused many choreographers, including me, to feel a little anxious about presenting our works. Although I felt apprehensive about the intimate space, I recognized that this concert was unlike any I had performed in previously because the space was not in a normal proscenium set up, and I believe I let that idea influence my experience. For example, I was able to interpret my piece in a unique way because I thought about…
