Samuel L. Jackson once said, “We’ve come a long way in our thinking, but also in our moral decay.” This quote holds true today as society stays rapidly changing and people become more and more desensitized to the horrors of the world. The line between right and wrong fades and turns to a larger gray area, and many things that happen in society today make us question how we, as a collective people, ended up where we are and how we acquired the customs we have today. Aldous Huxley, in his novel Brave New World, uses a great deal of satire and exaggeration to express his concerns for the society he was born into and bring attention to the problems of moral decay, drug dependency, and brainwashing, among other things, in the world.…

Hinton’s article is not an attempt to introduce his own views or opinions about egalitarianism. The main purpose of this article is demonstrate a deeper and more collective understanding of egalitarianism from a number of different viewpoints. He explores the advantages and disadvantages, in his opinion, of each philosophy. His position on this argument is based off of a formula he derived called the common ownership formula. This formula states that “each human being as an equal co-owner of the worlds resources, may use those resources provided that the terms of their use are in conformity with principles that no co-owners who sought to find equitable principles of resource division” (Hinton 517).…

The award-winning novel, The Road, written by Cormac McCarthy, portrays the man’s unconditional love for his son in the post-apocalyptic world. At first glance, the novel portrays a hopeless, desolate ambience and elements of despair seem to greatly outweigh elements of hope throughout the novel. Upon further analysis of the text, it is evident that McCarthy uses symbols to portray unconditional love and hope, thus making The Road a novel of hope. Throughout the novel, there is a constant battle between good and bad.…

John Updike’s “A&P” and Kurt Vonnegut’s “Harrison Bergeron” both deal with quite the same aspect of freedom. I am really enjoying this novel so far. In the first paragraph of the novel the author uses a first person point of view to disclose that the protagonist, August Pullman, has some sort of facial deformity as he wishes that “I had a normal face that no one ever notices at all” (3). I immediately knew that I would be taking a journey with this character through his eyes to see how he navigates through the outside world’s reactions and judgements of his differences. Fortunately, August has a supportive family who loves him and makes him feel not just ordinary, but “extraordinary” (3). As he describes his many surgeries and the reasons why he does not go to regular school, I began to think about how sheltered his life has been and if he is ready…
