My link to the strand is Syncopation and my composition is written in a reggae style. I like the offbeat feel of this style of music and syncopation was something I wanted to explore within it.
A well-known Caribbean musician is Bob Marley and I know that he uses a lot of syncopation in one of his best songs “three little birds”. In this song you can hear the syncopation in the hi-hat, cymbals, organ and guitar; playing the chords. In this way, he plays with our expectations of where the beat should occur and loosen up the rhythm and give it life.

A good example of offbeat accent is “Buffalo Soldier” by Bob Marley. The accent on the offbeat is what gives reggae its unique sound and in the “Buffalo Soldier” song, there is a single guitar playing the chords on the off beats.
Another thing which links my composition to the reggae style was the instruments I used. Firstly, one of the prominent aspects of reggae music is bass. It is played in low-frequency to emphasize the bass sound. I used riff which is a sequence of notes in a small number of bars that can be repeated to get a solid ground on the creation of my composition. Secondly, I used the piano for modulation and to follow one of the areas of study which informs me to use the primary chords and this is enforced by the use of modulation.
Overall, I think that my composition uses lots of different techniques and ideas to link it to the style of reggae and I think that I have successfully linked this to the strand of World Music by using syncopation. By combining the two styles, I think that I have successfully created a piece that covers all aspects of the criteria and created a successful
