The term schizophrenia was first used in 1911 by Eugen Bleuler. Bleuler was also the first to categorize symptoms as negative, and positive. Negative symptoms deal with symptoms plus an absence of normal behavior, while positive symptoms are symptoms in addition to normal behavior. The word schizophrenia is often associated with multiple personalities, this however is not accurate, as it is something completely different. Schizophrenia is defined as a severe disorder in which the person suffers from disordered thinking, bizarre behavior, hallucinations, and is unable to distinguish between fantasy or reality. The true cause of schizophrenia is still not known, what is known however is that there are certain traits that people with the disease share. Some of which are structural defects in the brain, inflammation, and genetic influences. It has also been seen that those with schizophrenia may have less gray matter, enlarged ventricles, and different chemical imbalances in the brain. If a family member is schizophrenic, then the direct relatives are more likely to develop the disease.
