This issue has caused unprofessional behavior toward his patients and his staff. One particular study showed about eight-thousand surgeons that are burnt out and or depressed, show the highest rate of error. Not only are patient’s safety at risk so are the physicians. At some point patients are going to be treated by a resident because the attending cannot safely take on another patient. Physicians have one of the largest suicide rates out of most occupations. Almost four-hundred physicians even med students die by suicide each year. Patients would never even know that most doctors are burnt out. They are very good at showing no weakness. A doctor a Stanford wrote an editorial on JAMA (Journal of the medical association). Surgeons are learning how serious mental health is for residents and physicians. It one of the articles I read, two residents were talking about how one had irritable bowel syndrome, and got in trouble for going to the bathroom too much. Another student talked about how he gets little sleep and doesn’t see his children very often. Most of the younger doctors that are sleep-deprived are told to “suck it up”. One student talked about how she shadowed a doctor that say a patient with terminal cancer, and she had nightmares about it. Now to this day she had a patient of her own with the similar problem and felt nothing. When asked about what the toughest part of their first five years of their program was, about twenty-percent said their biggest memory was being yelled at and belittled by their attending in front of other students. One attending admitted he was rude and mean to his peers. That same doctor changed his ways somewhat when he found out one of his students that graduated as the chief resident had killed himself. About a year after that news, Greco the doctor that bullied his students wanted to do something to change things. He helped put together a program so that students were about to have time to bond with other peers and take care of themselves. He made it mandatory for them to see a psychologist and since young doctors usually do not have time to see a doctor. A list of doctors was put for patients to see while at work.
