Essay On Marfan Syndrome

Marfan Syndrome is a disease causing effects to the heart, blood vessels, eyes, lungs, bones and joints. Other parts of the body which can be affected are the hands, chest, torso and the length or tallness. For those who play sports this disease can end their careers. Due to the pressure around the heart, lungs and blood vessels heavy activity is could lead to death. I chose this topic because I was tested for Marfan Syndrome due to large hands which are referred to as basket hands and for having an indented chest cavity. Information about all of these parts of the body and how they are affected and are signs of Marfan Syndrome. Marfan Syndrome is a disease where the connective tissue is moderately abnormal. This affects the heart, blood vessels, bones, joints, eyes, skin, and lungs. Last year when I was getting my physical for sports I failed due to my appearance. My hands were referred to as basket hands due to the oversized palms and long fingers. The doctor then started looking to where my arms hit on my legs and then ask to look at my chest. This is when he saw the indented chest and brought up the disease Marfan Syndrome. One way the lungs are affected is when your lungs collapse. This is practically what i said, the lungs collapse in on you or the lungs begin to fall off the chest wall. This can happen spontaneously and when your lungs collapse, everything from your lungs escapes where you can’t breathe. Another sign of Marfan Syndrome is restrictive lung disease. About 70% of people with Marfan Syndrome gets restricted lung disease. This is when the chest will not expand fully outward like it needs to when you breath. When the chest cannot expand fully this causes the lungs to not get all of the oxygen that it needs. This can result of muscle weakness, scoliosis,
