It was February 27, it was so close to spring. She sat there and thought how depressed she was the whole winter as she was every previous winter; sitting inside all day never once seeing the sunlight because her days had been taken from her by waking up at 6:20 every morning to sit through 8 hours of classes; mostly learning things that she wouldn 't remember in 8 years, and then going to after school basketball practice running her butt off until the clock struck 7. Just thinking about the smell of the cold snow made her cringe. But today on February 27, the temperature hit a high of 51 degrees. She remembered how she walked outside this morning to go and start the car. She opened the door on the side of her house and it made its usual longer than ever squeaky noise, as it was opening a spring breeze hit her, and she inhaled it like it was the last breath she’d ever take. It was beautiful. Her stomach flooded with butterflies and her mouth swung into a smile. She quickly took one more inhalement and then dashed upstairs to change her lululemon black yoga pants to some nice comfy Nike black running shorts, every chance Kayla had to wear shorts, she’d take it. It sounded like she was giving up and she knew that 's what they thought she was doing, she quickly added "mom and dad" to that thank-you. She just really wanted to let them know that she was grateful that they lived in Chicago. They immediately responded with " Kayla, don 't give up now!” And followed up with a long "inspirational " speech. Kayla shivered, she predicted they 'd say that. Thinking about that moment , she felt she had an excuse to act all grateful, because supposedly she could have had the thought that she could die soon, but truthfully she knew she wasn 't gonna die.
