Understanding schizophrenia
Do you really know what schizophrenia is? Most have this prejudice idea of how all schizophrenics behave; that they’re all insane and live in mental hospitals or on the street. Over all this is simply not true. Schizophrenia is a psychotic disorder characterized by loss of contact with the environment, by noticeable deterioration in the level of functioning in everyday life, and by disintegration of personality expressed as disorder of feeling, thought (as delusions), perception (as hallucinations), and behavior —called also dementia praecox (merriam-webster,2014).Schizophrenics have a hard time telling what is real and what is not, adults with the illness have abnormalities in about 20 brain regions ( Levitt, Bobrow, Lucia, & Srinivasan, 2010); which explains why many schizophrenics with hallucinations hear voices and see things that are not there. Although not all schizophrenics are all the same, some experience different symptoms and to different degrees On average most schizophrenic on medication don’t ever have any hallucination much less delusions, and they live very normal lives, most wouldn’t be able to tell if someone has schizophrenia or not if said person is medicated, yet schizophrenia is the modern leprosy (The Times, 2009) and just like leprosy it’s feared simply by misunderstandings and prejudice.…
