The mental illness, I choose to write about is paranoid schizophrenia. Before we jump into that, lets talk about what schizophrenia is. Schizophrenia is a chronic disorder that consists of reality testing, hallucinations, delusions and limited socialization. (NEEB’s) Schizophrenia is usually diagnosed during middle age. Under the category of schizophrenia, there are 5 types. These types include catatonic, disorganized, undifferentiated, residual, and paranoid.
According to Mosby’s dictionary, paranoid schizophrenia is a form of schizophrenia characterized by persistent preoccupation with illogical, absurd and changeable delusions, usually of persecutory, grandiose, or jealous nature, accompanied by related hallucinations. The main type of treatment used is medications. Antipsychotics are the main category used. Some antipsychotics are Haldol, Abilify, Zyprexa, Risperdal, and Latuda. The main problem with medications is that in order for them to work they must take them routinely and as scheduled with the doctor. This is sometimes a hard task for people with this illness to follow. Other options for the patient to go along with medications are therapy, whether it be individual or family. Individual therapy is recommended to help the patient overcome the problems he or she may be facing. Family therapy is recommended so that not only the patient can have someone to express their feelings too, but the family can have an opportunity to share their worries or fears. Patients who have paranoid schizophrenia may need help learning life and social skills. They also need a very sturdy support system since they will be going through many high and low periods. If these treatments don’t work, hospitalization may be another option, especially if the patient has relapsed into an episode of paranoia and is harm to themselves or others.
There are no known steps you can take in preventing paranoid schizophrenia. The most important thing is to follow the doctor’s orders. This plays a major factor in making it possible for someone with paranoid schizophrenia to live as normal of a life as
