These are just a few of the symptoms of schizoaffective disorder. Schizoaffective disorder is one of the most complicated mental disorders to properly identify and treat. This disorder involves both psychosis and severe mood disorders. Schizoaffective disorder is hard to distinguish from bipolar one disorder, major depressive episodes with psychotic features and schizophrenia, due to the symptoms and course of the disorder. A treatment for schizoaffective disorder includes medication and psychotherapy. Treatment is just as complicated as diagnosing the disorder. Schizoaffective disorder does not have a cure and the goal of treatment is to reduce relapse. However, with a proper treatment plan a person is able to live a typical life. This paper gives the dynamics of schizoaffective disorder and discusses diagnosing complications. It also distinguishes schizoaffective disorder over other similar disorders and explains some complications of treatment.
Diagnosing a person with schizoaffective disorder is complicated and only .3% of the population is diagnosed (NAMI, 2015). This fact might be inaccurate because many times a person with schizoaffective disorder is first diagnosed with schizophrenia, bipolar one or bipolar with psychotic features.
