According to the Mayo Clinic Staff (2016), “depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest.” It is more than just being sad; it is a weakness that you cannot snap out of easily. The National Institute of Mental Health divided depression into three categories. These include major depression, persistent depressive disorder (dysthymia), and minor depression. Major depression has severe symptoms that interfere with your ability to work, sleep, concentrate, eat, and enjoy life either during one episode or multiple episodes. Dysthymia is similar to major depression, but less severe and my last a long time. Lastly, minor depression is the least severe and do not last a long time (NIH). The signs and symptoms differ from those of younger people because they may not feel sad. Depression in old age symptoms usually include anxiety, fear, restlessness, irritation and poor sleep as well as memory and concentration difficulties may be prominent while sadness is less likely (Modig, Midlov, Kritensson, 2014). Whereas, with depression in younger people sadness plays a major role is diagnosis. There are multiple risk factors including those such as gender, problems related to physical health, neurotic personality traits, , inadequate life events, and lack of social support (ONAT, Ş.
