What is an Anxiety Disorder?

An anxiety disorder is a mental health condition that can affect anyone at any point in their lives. It is estimated that it affects 5% of the Australian population each year. There are many different types of anxiety, each one with its own causes and symptoms, but all curable. Many people experience anxiety everyday as it is human nature to worry, but this does not necessarily mean that they have an anxiety disorder. The main difference between the two is that when somebody who does not have an anxiety disorder worries, the feeling passes after the thing that caused them to worry is finished or has gone away, whereas somebody with an anxiety disorder constantly worries for an extended period of time that is over six months, and could even get to the extent where is prevents them from participating in everyday activities.

What Causes an Anxiety Disorder?

Although there are many types of anxiety disorders, they all relate to each other and if a person has one particular anxiety disorder, it is common that they would have had- or still have- another anxiety disorder too. Although each person is different, there are some causes that seem to frequently be the cause for an anxiety disorder to occur, some of which include:

- Ongoing problems based around family, friends, or relationships
- The death of a close friend or family member
- A family history or mental health issues
- Pregnancy
