What is an Anxiety Disorder?
An anxiety disorder is a mental health condition that can affect anyone at any point in their lives. It is estimated that it affects 5% of the Australian population each year. There are many different types of anxiety, each one with its own causes and symptoms, but all curable. Many people experience anxiety everyday as it is human nature to worry, but this does not necessarily mean that they have an anxiety disorder. One person may develop all or some of these symptoms, but it is usually at least three. These symptoms affect both the mental and physical side of somebody and because of this, some are unnoticeable. Many people are embarrassed about these symptoms so it is important not to mention them a lot or make fun of them and just in general be understanding towards the symptoms. Panic disorder is an anxiety disorder in which the person experiences frequent, unexpected panic attacks. This causes them to worry about having another panic attack and become overly worried about their health and wellbeing, causing them to stress even more. It may also cause them to avoid activities that cause their heart rate to rise (exercise etc.)
During a panic attack, the person may feel like they are choking or dying, experience and increased heart rate, sweat more than usual, become dizzy or light-headed, or have difficulty breathing.
