The most common debilitating effect of alcohol on a fetus is mental retardation.3 Some studies have shown that children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder have an IQ within the “normal” range, however. Even though intellectual disability isn’t needed to diagnose fetal alcohol syndrome, most babies effected by it do exhibit these impairments, along with facial abnormalities. These can include a smooth philtrum, thin upper lip, depressed nasal bridge, short nose, flat midface, and short palpebral fissures.2(p133), 3 Fetal alcohol syndrome can also cause problems with cognitive processes located in the frontal lobes.3 The frontal lobe is responsible for decision-making, especially when pertaining to goals, and also helps define an individual’s personality.8 This can lead to a vast array of problems, especially later on in life.…

Some of the effects of FAS include facial deformities where there is “small eyes, the absence of, or flattening of, the vertical groove between the nose and the upper lip (smooth philtrum); and a thin upper lip (Thompson, Levitt, & Standwood , n.d.) . It appears that the more pronounce these features are in affected child, the greater the likelihood that the child experienced prenatal brain damage. Studies show that Native Indians are five times more likely to have alcohol related deaths, diseases, driving related accidents, and fetal alcohol syndrome when compared to whites and the general population (Ertel, Rich-Edwards, Koenen, 2011). Fetal Alcohol Disorders are being extensively studied today, the true cellular mechanism of how this affects the fetus and why it is so detrimental is still unknown. It is understood that alcohol can cross the placenta from the mother to the fetus, much like general nutrition; this means when mom drinks, the fetus will receive the same amount of alcohol as she does. However, the fetus is completely relying on the maternal hepatic detoxification for all blood filtration, this is because a fetus’ liver does not (can not) function like an adults’.…

Although I do not have a particular connection with fetal alcohol syndrome, it is a serious condition prevalent in children exposed to alcohol during their mother’s pregnancy. This syndrome can only come from the mother ingesting alcohol and it is up to the mother to be responsible enough to know that alcohol, drugs and certain medication will affect her child. The effects of fetal alcohol syndrome last a lifetime and their is no cure for this. It is extremely dangerous to ingest any amount of alcohol during one’s pregnancy and women are reminded of this through television ads, warning labels and talk from doctors.…

Extreme alcohol consumption during pregnancy results in a child being born with a condition called Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS). The alcohol consumed by the expectant mother is considered a teratogen, which is any substance that can impair cognitive and behavioral outcomes (Santrock, 2013, p. 69). Symptoms of FAS vary but include birth defects, decreased growth, learning, and behavioral issues just to name a few (“Alcohol Effects on a Fetus-Topic Overview,” 2015, para. 3). The impact alcohol has on the fetus in utero lasts a lifetime for a child diagnosed with FAS. Society today places a high value on education and goal achievement, and a child entering first grade has so much to learn.…

It is also not a good idea to drink while pregnant. The unborn baby can be affected by the alcohol and this can lead to lifelong problems. “One of the most serious consequences of drinking during pregnancy is fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), a group of incurable and lasting problems for the child that can include mental retardation, vision and hearing problems, and physical birth defects.” (Gale, 2015). Drinking a lot causes intoxication with symptoms which include slurred speech, impaired balance, and not normal behavior.…
