The media’s role in America is to provide an unbiased overview of current events happening in the world. But do we ever truly receive an objective view of any given situation? In the story In Cold Blood, the author Truman Capote conveys a tone of tragic and sorrow because of the murder there was. In the beginning of In Cold Blood, there is a frequent use of negative words such as “lonesome” and “unpaved”. “The land is flat and the views are awesomely extensive; horses, white cluster of grain elevator rising as gracefully as Greek temples are visible long before a traveler reaches them. Perry and Dick “were ten miles out” and the water was darkening”.…

Although in Truman Capote’s book In Cold Blood, the author is illustrating the points of view of Holcomb, Dick, and Perry after the murder of the Clutter family, his prime motive is to exploit the devastation felt by the community; therefore, he accomplishes this by emphasizing the agony, confusion, and panic experienced by a loss. Capote uses tricolon to help convey the dark blanket of emotions that overcame Holcomb after the murders, which one can see from the perspective of Agent Alvin Dewey’s family. One night after the death of the Clutter family, Mrs. Dewey hears one of her normally untroubled sons crying in his room, and again at their breakfast table the next morning: “His mother had not needed to ask him why [he was crying]; she…

Although the infamous murder of the Clutter family happened in November of 1959, Capote’s story was not published by Random House until late September of 1965. It was a long process for Capote to gather all the information needed to pull off this story. He traveled to Holcomb shortly after the murder and then he spent the next six years writing and researching the background behind the town, the family, and the two killers. While the book was considered a success by many “In Cold Blood is the work of art, the work of an artist" (Garrett 80), critics believe it was Truman’s last great work. He never published another book after In Cold Blood, and he even felt that the writing of the story took too much out of him: “ ‘it scraped me right down…

When Truman Capote wrote In Cold Blood, he took the responsibility of writing a novel, while incorporating facts about the Clutter family murder. Because the killings were a sensitive matter to the people of Holcomb and the Clutters’ relatives during the time of his research, Capote had to find a way to respect the sentiments of the people affected by being as accurate as possible. However, the author adds in elements commonly used in a novel to dramatize the situation and add the element of mystery to it. The combination of fictional devices and journalism allows Capote to document the occasion, while adding his own characterization and personal touch on the situation. While the murders did take place in Kansas, and the detailed descriptions…
