Great Gatsby Essay
People who are observant and understanding of one’s background show sympathy and consideration. In the novel , The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald illustrates that social status reveals who you are. Notably, Nick’s awareness and compassion for Gatsby originates from his background of spoiled people.
Nick reveals his empathy towards Gatsby because he feels that Gatsby doesn’t receive the appreciation he deserves due to Gatsby’s social status. For instance, Gatsby gets abandoned from Tom and the Sloanes even though he “wanted to go, [but] he didn’t see Mr. Sloane determined he shouldn’t ” (Fitzgerald 103). For example, Nick was directed by his father to not criticize anyone since “‘ all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages [he’s] had’” (Fitzgerald 1). Being taught to not be judgemental at a young age opened the eyes of Nick that it is not what you see on the outside. Furthermore, it made Nick see past labels and Gatsby’s social status which gave him an opportunity to build a close relationship with Gatsby. Also, Nick started to respect Gatsby more since Gatsby did not fit any of the rumors that were being spread about him. Although, all this would not have happened if Nick was judgemental. Additionally, Nick’s personal experiences with wealthy people showed him that there are people who are a lot more rotten than Gatsby. Specifically when Nick makes a statement about Tom, Daisy, and Jordan that “they’re a rotten crowd..” (Fitzgerald ) After Gatsby died, Nick then realizes that he has been hanging with the wrong crowd, consequently appreciating Gatsby even more. On the contrary, others disagree that the reason why Nick gives empathy towards Gatsby is due to the overwhelming crowd of rotten, judgemental, and materialistic people. In other words, Gatsby outshines everybody since he’s not as cruel as the people who surround him. Although he does deserve the praise he receives from Nick because Gatsby does so much.
