Many of those who should be looking out for Alex, only a teenager, are actually just using him for their own means. P.R. Deltoid, Alex’s Post Correction Officer, for example, does not care about Alex’s well-being, but instead cares about his own reputation. Deltoid reveals this when he says that, if Alex gets in trouble with the law again, Deltoid will receive “a big black mark” and have “a confession of failure.” The writer that Alex beats and whose wife he rapes, also is difficult to sympathize with because, while his desire for revenge is understandable, he tries to use Alex to protest the government. He says that Alex, in his conditioned state after the Ludovico Technique, “can be the most potent weapon imaginable to ensure that the government is not returned to the forthcoming election,” showing that he only wants to use Alex as a political weapon and does not actually want to help him like he told Alex he would. The Minister of the Interior also uses Alex for political gains, saying that Alex “can be instrumental in changing the public verdict” on his government and using bribery to get Alex to cooperate. Other important characters’ questionable morality and how they treat Alex make him more easy to sympathize
