Sympathy In Hurricane Maria

Hurricanes are one of the most damaging and devastating storms that begins over warm ocean waters. The high winds and surges causes a lot of damage in the cities throughout the lands affected. Sympathy is usually the feeling that people have towards others that have lost their lives and homes. On the other hand, individuals would have empathy because they understand the feelings of those that are afflicted by the destruction of the weather. When counselors has sessions with their clients about their problems they are dealing with, the helper has to make sure that they do not confuse sympathy and empathy. Hurricane Maria left destruction in its path. In Puerto Rico, the wind and floods damaged the roads, homes, and left many with electricity. The natural disaster killed dozens of people. According to the Associated Press 2017, “The number of deaths in Puerto Rico blamed on Hurricane Maria has increased to 51”. Some of the deaths are caused by infections from the bacteria from contaminated water. Sympathy goes out to those that are struggling to survive in such conditions. Sometimes, it can be difficult not to show certain emotions. According to Arthur Clark, “Empathy from Sympathy may contribute to misdirections in the treatment process” (95). The two can cause perplexity in the relationship during advisement (Clark, 2010). Sympathy is reacting on the information shared by the client. For instance, if the helper starts crying about the clients misfortune the counseling session can be ineffective. The relationship between a counselor and client must remain professional. “It is essential for a counselor to be aware of both its strengths and its limitations” urges Clark.
