The creative editing, ingenious non-speaking scenes, unceasing black humors and hidden social criticism of the film Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance directed by Park Chan-wook are memorable and thought provoking. For example, it is ironic that the moan of pain from the sick sister and the groan of happy expression from upstairs sounds no big different. No wonder the four young neighbors would misunderstand. Enjoyment is separated from suffering only by a wall. When Ryu enjoys the tasty of noodles, he is unable to notice his sister’s pain because of his deafness even in a same space. Her whole experiences are closely related to social and political issues. Ryu is like a revolutionary—she stands on the side of vulnerable groups as a lover of Ryu and offers suggestions and plans as a leader of Ryu. She goes to deaf-mute school even if she is neither deaf nor dumb; she establishes a leftist group, which has herself as the only member; she has tried to steal into North Korea but failed; she always propagandize anarchism on the street and provides Ryu idea—kidnapping the little girl in good faith. Furthermore, the incredible ending of the film makes Young-mi’s last saying hard to be overlooked. As a last-ditch effort to survive, Young-mi mentions that members of her group would take revenge for her; however, neither Dong-jing nor audience takes Young-mi’s last saying seriously. Nevertheless, Dong-jin is killed by four strange mans who seemingly comes from Young-mi archaist group. It is thought provoking why the director set up this kind of ending. It might want to prove the hidden power of people from the bottom of the society. It also might want to criticize the government’s responsibility in contrast to the anarchist
