Initially my enjoyment level of Sympathy for Lady Vengeance scaled similarly along its two predecessor films however in the second half of the film I believe the unharmonious shift in Lady Vengeance’s narrative structure waivered a little too much for my liking. Specifically the heavily emphasized subplot involving Lee Geum-ja’s daughter as well as the subplot including the family members of the murdered children. These two narrative devices took a lot of primary focus off of Lee Guem-ja’s character arc as a whole and consequently didn’t allow me to connect with either Lee Geum-ja or Mr. Baek as much as I would’ve like to. I was fascinated by his approach to tell Lee Geum-ja’s backstory from the perspective of her inmates, which added nice kicks of dark humor. Additionally, I did like Chan-wook’s blended use of cinematography elements from both predecessors films Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Oldboy. Easily, my most favorite shot from the film occurred in the scene where Lee Geum-ja’s daughter is shown moving on a swing in front the outback of Australia. Where the camera moves in an orbiting axis around the pareidolia lettered clouds.
Even though it was kind of a disappointment compared too the first two films of the Vengeance trilogy. Sympathy for Lady Vengeance demonstrates Park Chan-wooks ability to show the cycle of vengeance in three different ways and comparatively validating himself as an innovator in the revenge thriller
