Although Romeo & Juliet are an iconic symbol of love in today’s culture, it is important to know that love was not easily found in the beginning of this story. When Romeo is first introduced in the book, he is coping with the pain of a broken heart from the conclusion of his previous relationship in which he was so deeply in love with another girl who did not love him back. Romeo, saddened by the thought of love, describes the pernicious disease as “a madness most discreet,”. Romeo clearly struggling to find love in any of his relationships can only defy love as the most wonderful dream of all that will never come true. Towards the end of Act 1 Scene one, Romeo tells Mercutio “Feather of lead, bright smoke, cold fire, sick health, Still-waking sleep, that is not what it is! When Juliet agreed to marry Romeo, she agreed to oblige her loyalty to Romeo and vice versa. In addition to this, Romeo only killed Tybalt as revenge for killing his own cousin and best friend Mercutio. Although knowing Romeo wasn’t the instigator of the fight may not have justified the killing, it shows that Romeo had a legitimate reason for doing what he did and the action wasn’t done out of spontaneous animosity towards the capulets. Knowing Romeo wasn’t the instigator clearly mattered to Juliet as she said “But wherefore, villain, didst thou kill my cousin? That villain cousin would have killed my husband. (Act III. Scene II. Lines 102-103). Juliet’s reaction to knowing Romeo was not the instigator clearly influenced Juliet’s decision which was to ultimately to take the side of Romeo. I believe she did not only side with Romeo because he is the love of her life and her deer husband, but because she knew Tybalt was more in the wrong than Romeo
