Sameness, the Key to an Utopian Society In The Giver, Lois Lowry utilizes three aspects of Jonas’s society to illustrate Sameness. These primary aspects are control, rules, and individuality, all of which appear in the text constantly. However, all of these aspects are key factors that build upon the idea of Sameness. In the text, The Giver refers to the word “Sameness” to describe the similarities within the community in addition to the very few differences amongst the citizens inhabiting the community.…

During ‘The Truman Show’ we find out that Truman, was an orphan and was the first baby the ever be owned by a corporation and raised entirely from birth on a movie set. The way that the audience of the show watches on so eagerly knowing this goes to show how desensitized they have become to the immoralities of the entertainment industry. The audience is willing to put aside the feelings and emotions and wellbeing of another person for their own entertainment without a second thought. Truman at one point say “you’ve never had a camera in my head” this shows the emotional trauma caused to him but is accepted for the sake of public entertainment. The director of the show Christof also cares very little for the wellbeing of Truman, treating him as a prop not a person.…

The utopian was put in place in order for there to be a representation of a perfect society, one where everyone is equal and there is no such thing as deceit and pain. The book, The Giver, is about a community that lives based on strict, assigned rules. There are three major rules that I disagree with such as having other people making choices for you, the certain amount of children that you can have, and not having the privileges to take things home. I do not agree with Jonas’s community. One major rule that I disagree with is only having a certain amount of children that you birthed.…

Although 1984 is a dystopian future and The Giver is a Utopian future the two books share a surprising amount of similarities among the differences showing that a Utopian society is only steps away from being dystopian. Variations in what to do with the past, security, war, and levels of class make up some of the differences and similarities between the two societies. One similarity that is noticeable from the beginning of both books is that they are watched at all times. The majority of the first book in 1984 was how Winston had to hide his facial expressions and his diary away from the telescreens so to keep unnoticed by the thought police. The Big Brother government in 1984 keeps a hold on its party citizens by arresting and catching anybody…

Despite the plot which has been done before (most notably on television series "The Twilight Zone" and "The Prisoner"), "The Truman Show" manages to surprise and delight. The clever screenplay by "Gattaca" scripter Andrew Niccol plays up on the inherent phoniness of televised drama with a very sly and subversive sense of humor. The script is also engaging in its emotional dynamic of Truman having his world unraveled around him, and choosing between risking his own life for freedom, or to stay content in the world's most comfortable prison. However, unlike the bloated "Godzilla", "The Truman Show" ends too quickly without giving a chance to thoroughly explore the…

In this paper, I will argue that the book and film adaptation of The Giver by Lois Lowry demonstrates the outcome of thoughtlessly following government regulations as seen in Plato’s Allegory of the Cave as well as other theories he examines. The similarities between the context of The Giver and the philosophical standpoints that Pluto stands by is astounding. The Giver follows the life of a 16-year-old boy named Jonas, who lives in a society which is greatly controlled by their community elders. This control ranges from choosing who lives, who dies, the colors people are able to see, their careers and the memories people carry with them.…
