By destroying these animals and not allowing future generations to enjoy their beauty, we are causing ourselves damage. These animals are brutally and unnecessarily slaughtered—and who are we to say that they have less of a right to exist than we do." - Actress Hayden Panettiere, in a statement released November 2, 2007 creating awareness on the need to put an end to the drastic killings of Dolphins for cultural, economic and other purposes (liberalvaluesblog.com). Dolphin killing is expected to cause a total extinction of not just Dolphins but other aquatic species as well, in about 37 years from now. This is because these animals do not produce in a large scale but are slaughtered in large quantity. This results from increased use of technology and lack of awareness. Again, a continuous fall in the population of not just dolphins but the sea life in a whole is not far from materializing if this problem stays unchecked. Slaughter of Dolphins might lead to a complete change in the ecosystem since the role played by dolphins in the ecosystem will no longer be accomplished due to a fall in population and extinction. This will also lead to an Environmental degradation. Since Tilikum the killer whale killed trainer Dawn Brancheau in 2010 at Sea World Orlando, there has been a great outcry over the topic of whether whales should be in captivity. So much so, a film in 2013 grossed $2,063,312 [1] by negatively depicting Orca whales in captivity. However, since 2010 there has been 197 [2] human deaths by ‘domesticated’ canines, but yet there is no emotional uproar or million dollar documentaries shaming domestication of man’s best friend. Why do we have particular trouble with the training, confinement, and breeding of one species of animals but turn a blind eye to another animal? The $2,063,312 film “Black Fish” seems to accentuate the mistreatment of Orcas in confinement at Sea World.…

A documentary about killer whales may not be that intriguing when one first catches word of it; once the viewer takes a look, they understand why it has become a well know film and has spread like wild fire. Blackfish, a documentary directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, discusses the negatives of keeping killer whales in captivity. It drives home the fact that industries who keep these large creatures captive, should be boycotted by the public. Blackfish uses literary devices to evoke the audience’s emotions to persuade them that the SeaWorld industry is cruel and that killer whales do not belong in captivity, but also explains it in a biased point of view. When one first looks at the documentary, visually, it is both thought and emotionally resonating.…

The article by PHYS.ORG (2014) was written about the new dolphin species of Victoria, Australia, called the Burrunan dolphin. This species was recently discover by Dr. Kate Charlton-Robb, 3 years ago, in 2011 (PHYS.ORG, 2014). Although not a lot is known about them, there is a concern surrounding the conservation of Burrunan dolphins (PHYS.ORG, 2014). The population size of the species is very small and according to Dr. Charlton-Robb, for each region there are less than 100 dolphins that can contribute to the gene pool of the next generation (PHYS.ORG, 2014). This lack in genetic diversity and the fact the individual populations are so isolated leads to the worry that the species will not be able to sustain itself and that conservation efforts…

Blue Whales, the largest animals in the world so far, are facing with the situation of being extinct, as they have been harvested for a long time, making the population decrease to 50,000. In the early 20 century, people took up whaling for the energy sources, and the meat and fat of whales can be used in different ways. Since the price of whale meat is really high, many people regard the profit as the chief motivation, caring less about the ecological system. There were about 66000 whales being killed during a hunting season in 1961 and till the International Whaling Commission (IWC) banned whaling, the number of whales has decreased 99% of it’s total population.…
