Symbols in any book are extremely important; symbols can tell you plenty of things that are later important in the book. Symbols represent a hidden meaning behind an object. On the contrary, symbols have more than one meaning. "Here's the problem with symbols: people expect them to mean something. Not just any something, but one something in particular. Exactly. Maximum... So some symbols do have a relatively limited range of meanings, but in general a symbol can't be reduced to standing for only one thing. If they can, it's not symbolism, it's allegory." (Foster, Thomas 104-105) Symbols are everywhere, and there is no escape from them. The Crucible, written by Aurthur Miller, has plenty of symbols that could mean plenty of things.

One of the symbols in The Crucible is John Proctor's name; it is a symbol for respect and a good reputation. He had an affair with a girl naed Abigail and his wife found out soon after; later in the book, he has to sign a document stating that he has done that and has practiced witchcraft. Though he has had an affair, he has not practiced any witchcraft that the reader knows of. "Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! It represents false hope for false issues and religion. All of the accusing, all of the problems, and all of the lies is all a joke. The Puritans try to use the Bible to talk God into the "evil-doers" and try to beat the Bible into everyone else as well. Innocent people are hung for no reason; the Puritans think they are being hung because they worship the Devil; people are being hung because the young women that stated this will not confess their actions and blame bad things on people the do not like.
