Speck Symbolism Analysis

What is symbolism? Symbolism is when an object has many different meanings than just the object that it is. For example, a heart is an organ in a living body, but it a heart also stands for love, affection, and many other meanings. This paper is going to evolve symbolism in the life of a young girl in the novel Speck. Overall, the life of Melinda will turn topsy-turvy. During the Second Marking Period, Milinda’s life turns topsy-turvy. First, the school decides to get a new mascot. Melinda wants the new mascot to be named overbearing eurocentric Patriarchs, but she does not bring it up. As the year keeps going, Melinda cleans and puts up a poster in the old grunge janitors closets. Then in Spanish class, Melinda has to conjugate five words for homework. After taking a career aptitude test, Melinda test results are all over the places just like her life. Over Thanksgiving break, Melinda’s mother was under a lot of stress with her job. It is written “Apple Smell soaked the air. One time when I was little my parents took me to an orchard” (Anderson 66). This shows that she misses the good old days when life was not so complicated. Also, she realized that her life will never go back to the way it was before the summer. Then a little later she found something in her apple. The novel said, “My apple has twelve seeds. One of the seeds had split it’s shell and reaches a white hand upwards. An apple tree growing from an apple seed growing in an able” (Anderson 67).
