In the book “Doll Bones” by Holly Black, three best friends (Zach, Alice, and Poppy) have played with each other since they were little, and they mostly play with dolls and action figures until they get into middle school. One day Zach's father tells him to grow up and play basketball instead, but he doesn't listen. So, Zach's father throws the action figures away. Zach doesn't tell any of his friends, but he avoided them for a while. Then, one day Poppy calls up Zach and Alice.
