The Importance of Delphin A story would not be complete without two sorts of characters: Major characters and minor characters. While major characters are vital for the development and resolution of the conflict, minor serve to support and add key element to the story. The term minor is not appropriate because they aren’t minor at all; they play essential roles in the story. Also, they contribute to the intrigue of the story and the development of the main characters. The use of certain characters in a story can make us change the way we perceived the story. “Roman Fever” is an American short story written by Edith Wharton in 1934. Before all those problems Grace and Alida were good friend they “first met here they were younger than their girls are now. You remember!”(Wharton, 1934, p.1). It means that they had a friendship relation since they were young. But unfortunately, because of the secret relation of Grace and Delphin this friendship turned to a jealous and rivalry relationship. In this story, the intention of Alida is to humiliate Grace and to show her that she is superior. Mrs. Slade wants to demonstrate to Grace that she won the fight “You tried your best to get him away from me, didn’t you? But you failed; and I kept him. That’s all.” “Yes. That’s all.”(Wharton, 1934, p.8). The fact that they fight each other means that they are in a competition and each one wants to be the best for Delphin. This shows how a beautiful relationship can become revenge with rivalry. Also the story shows how the friendship between the two women loses its value du to the jealousy. Moreover, the relationship between Grace and Delphin leads to “I had Barbara”(Wharton, 1934, p.9). The revelation of Barbara is the heart of plot. This also emphasizes the fact that Love and Passion were present but also involves destructive passion. First thing to remember is that Delphin has a strong influence on other characters.
