Symbolism gives the reader a different outlook on what they are reading. It allows the reader not only to read the literal meaning but also what it symbolizes and how it can affect the whole story. There are many different symbols around us that we don’t realize. For example, a dove is a symbol of peace. Whenever you may see a dove you may think about “peace.” The color white is also a symbol. It may symbolize surrender. When in war and the opposing side wants to surrender they will raise a “white” flag. On the other hand the color red has a different symbolization. When you see the color red you may think about love or romance. Symbolism can allow the reader to open their minds and read between the lines of what the author has to say. On

Mr. Summers symbolizes the time the lottery occurs. Hearing the name Mr. Summers you would think that something good was going to happen, because when you hear “summer” you automatically think about kids laughing, playing, and having fun. In this case you don’t. In an article named “‘The Lottery’ by Shirley Jackson Book Review,” Figueroa states “Summer is usually thought to be a cheerful and joyous time…” In the story, summer is not joyous at all in fact it is the complete opposite. Mr. Summers also symbolizes contradiction due to the fact that he represents “the irony of the evil that awaits its place later in the story.” (As quoted by Figueroa) Mr. Summers is contradicting in view of the fact that his name is also the time the whole event takes place. Not only the time the event takes place but also how he is the announcer. He is the person that is calling out the family names and in charge of the black blox. Mr. Summers is a superior illustration of both when the lottery occurs and how his name is rebuttal to the story. Now that readers have noticed the symbolism Mr. Summers had with the story any other readers would be able to read between the lines of what Shirley Jackson really had to say, and the true reason Mr. Summers was named Mr.
