Objects and people can be used as symbols to show an alternate meaning for different things. In Lord of the Flies, William Golding uses symbolism in many ways to express an underlying message to the reader. Symbolism can be seen in many objects throughout the story some examples include Piggy 's glasses, the conch, and the fire. After being trapped on an island, many things are needed in order for them to survive, and some of these things become symbols of their survival. Without the use of symbols, the interpretation of the story could be altered and be taken in many different ways. The conch, within the story, is a symbol of order, because Ralph uses it to call upon the other boys. This symbol is a very important part of the story because in a world without adults, this is the only order that they have established for themselves. “By the time Ralph finished blowing the conch, the platform was crowded with boys”(32). The conch is shown as a relevant symbol because it brings everyone together, which creates order on an island of chaos, and by using the conch as a base, they create rules for themselves as well. This symbol of order shows its relevance and importance by showing how the conch’s call is responded to by the boys, however, their response to the conch changes throughout the story. “The conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist”(181). In the end, when Piggy is killed, the conch is killed along with him. The boys kill Piggy which ultimately shows that they also have become savages. This is also symbolized by the conch, a symbol of order, being crushed into a thousand pieces. By crushing the conch, this shows that the boys have destroyed their old selves as well as their order because the conch was their only established form of past civilization. The destruction of the conch can also be related to the destruction caused by the fire that destroys
